Dr. Steven Shannon

Dr. Steven Shannon is originally a northern Nevada native. He completed a Bachelors of Science with Distinction in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno and then obtained his Medical Doctorate at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Shannon was honored to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Mayo Clinic has been ranked as the #1 hospital in the nation for years and Dr. Shannon gained world class education and training, specifically in hip & knee replacement under the mentorship of surgeons:  Dr. Mark Pagnano, Dr. David Lewallen, Dr. Tad Mabry, Dr. Robert Trousdale and Dr. Kevin Perry.  As a result, Dr. Shannon is one of a few surgeons in Lincoln, NE performing direct anterior total hip arthroplasty and is the only surgeon performing periacetabular osteotomies (PAO).

Dr. Shannon went on to complete his orthopedic trauma fellowship at the world famous, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland under the tutelage of Dr. Jason Nascone, Dr. Robert O'Toole, Dr. Marcus Sciadini, and the legendary Dr. W. Andy Eglseder. Dr. Shannon gained the clinical and  surgical experience to care for injuries, specifically severe pelvic/acetabular trauma and limb salvage utilizing the Ilizarov technique, presenting to one of the busiest trauma centers in the world.

After spending years at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Dr. Shannon and his wife fell in love with this Midwest and sought a city where he could create a truly unique orthopaedic trauma program in addition to raising their children in a family friendly Midwest city. Dr. Shannon joined the Bryan Trauma Center in Lincoln, Nebraska to care for injured patients not only from Lincoln, but patients presenting from all over Nebraska and neighboring states.

Dr. Shannon brought unique surgical skill sets in the care of traumatically injured patients, particularly pelvic trauma and limb salvage. Because of Dr. Shannon, Bryan Trauma Center is now the only trauma center in Nebraska utilizing the STARR Frame for percutaneous minimally invasive pelvic and acetabular surgery to decrease patient morbidity and improve outcomes. Dr. Shannon is also the only physician in Nebraska utilizing the Ilizarov limb salvage technique. This process involves transporting a segment of bone slowly over time with a ring fixator, essentially growing the patient’s limb back that otherwise would have faced amputation from the complications of their initial trauma.

Dr. Shannon is also expanding Bryan clinical research activity in orthopedic trauma. He has been an author in over 40+ peer reviewed publications, national/international podium presentations and book chapters. He received the highest honor for orthopaedic trauma research, the Edwin G. Bovill Jr., MD Award for Best Paper Presented at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association 2018 Annual Meeting for his randomized prospective study on hip fractures. Because of his extensive research, he was able to enroll Bryan Trauma Center in the international multicenter trauma trial PREPARE-making Bryan Trauma Center the only trauma center in Nebraska to be involved in this ground breaking study. In addition, Dr. Shannon and his team began participating in three more national trauma randomized control trials in 2023.
